Grootegaster- molenpolder
The nature reserve of Rikkerda runs into the Grootegastermolenpolder. You can therefore easily extend your walk on the estate into the adjoining lands. Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) and various private individuals jointly manage this unique area. Its uniqueness lies in its slight elevation, caused by the Lutjegast ridge. In the surrounding lower-lying area, you can still find old peat ditches. This ancient cultural landscape can be best experienced by following the extension of the Rikkerda path: the neighboring Abel Tasman path.
Lauwersmeer
For centuries, fresh and salt water flowed into each other in the Lauwers Sea. Fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam in 1969, leading to the creation of a beautiful new landscape and a true bird paradise. The nature in the Lauwers Lake (Lauwersmeer) is so special that the area has been designated as a National Park. Visitors are welcome day and night, as it is also a designated dark sky area and as such is perfect for stargazing In addition to Activity Centre Lauwersnest and the Information Pavilion in Lauwersoog, the Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer has an information network of certified Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer hosts and hostesses.
Groningen
Groningen is a rebellious city. Different from the norm. Its outspoken architecture is immediately visible, like the Groninger Museum and the renowned Forum. But you only really experience it when you look further: you will discover its idiosyncratic character in the alleys full of street art, and at quirky businesses that manage to surprise you time and again. The city is bustling with free spirits who go their own way.
